Relation-shape: Visualizing Human Relationships

Relation-shape is an ongoing artistic practice initiated in 2005 that visualizes invisible human relationships through bodies, fabric, and space.

In installations and performances where participants place their bodies inside translucent and elastic fabric, they interact with one another without words during a shared period of time.

The nonverbal interactions that emerge there — distance, breathing, gaze, tension, and presence — continuously shift according to the relationships between participants, as well as their cultural backgrounds, environments, and psychological states.

Intimacy, rejection, empathy, and invisible power dynamics are transmitted from the body into the fabric, appearing as movements, expansion, contraction, and transformations of space. Enveloping the body, the fabric functions as a membrane that simultaneously separates and connects inside and outside, self and other, individual and collective, becoming a device through which relationships are made visible.

The relationships, movements, and spatial shifts that emerge through the installations and performances are translated into photographs, videos, and abstract digital images, each developing as independent works.

 In an age shaped by digital society and AI, where human relationships are increasingly verbalized and transformed into data, Relation-shape continues to question what it means to engage with others and to coexist through the body within the same space.

Relation-shape は、人と人のあいだに存在する目には見えない関係性を、身体、布、空間を通して視覚化する実践として、2005年より継続している。

半透過性と伸縮性を持つ布によるインスタレーション／パフォーマンスを通して、参加者たちは言葉を介さずに共有された時間の中で他者と関わり合う。そこに生まれる距離、呼吸、視線、緊張、気配といった非言語的な相互作用は、参加者同士の関係性や文化的背景、環境、心理状態によって絶えず変化していく。

親密さ、拒絶、共感、見えない力関係は、身体から布へと伝わり、伸縮や動き、空間の変化として立ち現れる。布は身体を包み込みながら、内側と外側、自分と他者、個と集団を隔てると同時に繋ぐ膜として機能し、関係性を可視化する装置となる。

インスタレーションやパフォーマンスを通して生まれる関係性や動き、空間の変化は、写真、映像、抽象的なデジタルイメージとして展開され、それぞれ独立した作品となる。

デジタル社会やAIによって人間関係がさらに言語化・データ化されていく現代において、Relation-shapeは、同じ空間の中で他者と関わり、身体を介して共に存在することの意味を問い続けている。
