Relation-shape: Visualizing Human Relationships

Relation-shape visualizes human relationships and invites people to experience how we generate connections with others, making visible the often unnoticed dynamics of daily life. Using the human body and the state of human relationships as primary materials, and fabric as a medium, it creates conditions in which interactions naturally unfold.

The semi-transparent, stretchable fabric responds to participants’ movements, distances, and tensions, translating interactions—whether strain, playfulness, or intimacy—into tangible, physical forms. In this way, relationships can be experienced within the performance and observed in real time, as well as through my photography and digital works.

The space is not a stage but a generative environment. Each site’s cultural, historical, and social context shapes how relationships form, change, and resonate, while embracing the contingency of those present.

Although Relation-shape does not present a direct political message, the subtle forces shaping human relationships emerge through participants’ physical and psychological interactions, informed by the context of each site.

Since 2005, Relation-shape has been my artistic practice and a reflection of my concerns about how digital technologies—and now AI—mediate, abstract, and digitize human relationships. Although these tools connect us globally, they also amplify social divides, discrimination, and inequality. We can easily reach those who share our interests and ideals, while excluding those who differ.

What is a relationship? What does it truly mean to connect? What does it mean for people to coexist in shared space?

Relation-shape poses these questions to contemporary society.
